MBE is an energy company that specializes in conversion of biological waste to energy. We focus on the conversion of water hyacinth biomass to electricity in Indonesia.

Why Indonesia:
  • Indonesia needs energy: today, its power production falls 25% short of demand while more than 25% of households are not even connected to the grid.
  • On top of this - as a result of its economic growth - Indonesia's energy demand grows by 10% per year.
  • Indonesia has commitment and determination to provide 25% of its energy demand from renewable sources by 2025.
  • Indonesia has a renewable energy capacity of 150 GW of which 55 GW can be generated from Biomass.

Why Anaerobic Digestion:
  • Anaerobic Digestion enables high continuity at low operating cost
  • New and improve consortia of microbes and enzymes enable maximum energy extraction from the biomass
  • Specialized microbes release cellulose and hemi-cellulose from their lignin encapsulation
  • Improved Plug Flow Reactor design resolves biochemical conflicts and stabilizes production

Why Water Hyacinth:
  • Water Hyacinth is a pest and has no commercial value. 
  • Water Hyacinth causes major problems: lakes become shallow causing droughts and floods; it blocks waterways and sewage systems; it blocks sunlight from reaching underwater ecosystems, killing off all life.
  • Water Hyacinth provides shelter and excellent breeding ground for flies and mosquitos and accelerate the spreading of diseases such as Dengue fever  
  • Water Hyacinth infested waterways eventually disappear and  end up as swamps causing major economic, ecologic and social catastrophe in local communities

Why 5 MW:
  • 5 MW is the optimum between the economies of scale and the increasing complexities of water hyacinth logistics
  • Capacity can be scaled up by multiplying the 5 MW power plants
  • Redundancy is built in every 5 MW power plant such that will always deliver 5 MW operating power and deliver a reliable contribution to local power supply
  • 5 MW power 50.000 rural households and will suffice in feeding a small region.
